After a busy month and 21 entries overall (!), I have selected a winner. Click below to find out who takes home the “Best In Iris” Award….
So many of these entries were amazing, but there can be only one winner.
And that winner is…
IGNACIO!
I think there was very little doubt about this one. Short and sweet, love the grafitti, love the song at the end. And as if that wasn’t enough, Ignacio made two more excellent Irises after the fact. Congrats, Ignacio, I’ll be emailing you shortly.
First Runner-Up:
Katie Bode, “Iris: The Incredible Journey”
Second Runner-Up
Will Hyler, “Iris Redux”
Third Runner-Up
John Bring, “Irish”
Extremely Honorable Mentions
Brian Rowe, “Girl Brains, Boy Bodies / Iris”
Hamza Riaz, “Iris/Rajput”
Ching2DaChong, “Iris Reversed”
Jenni Powell, “Anne Frank’s Iris”
I think these all these videos had the best overall package, but I’d like to point out some moments in others that I really enjoyed. Here are my favorite Iris moments:
“Don’t give in to peer pressure. If you find yourself being asked to play a game of basketball, just very politely say “No, I have a paper to write”.
- Bubba Wray
“So tonight, if someone asks you if you want to shoot some hoops, tell them you can’t. You have a paper to write”.
- John Frye
Also the fact that he got his mom in it. Also the use of the City of Angels Soundtrack, and the idea of guys playing b-ball to the City of Angels soundtrack.
“Today has been the day that has marked your unmaking, Steve. I will die, this cancer will consume me, but I will persist in some form, and I will haunt you, and I will persecute you”.
- Ryan Mitchell
Also, Brian Engh’s acting deserves kudos. As well as Austin still giving cool guy gestures regardless of what is being said.
“You wanna go shoot some people?”
- Point and Shoot Films
Also a shout-out to Adam Daroff and Ron Swerdon for their awesome post-modern Irises.
Big ups to Jim for doing a non-video “Iris”. And of course, anyone who recorded their own version of the song gets a big thumbs up in my book. So great job, John Bring, Austin Mitchell, Will, and of course, Ignacio.
In all seriousness, I really want to say thanks to all of you. I think every single person I know who does videos submitted, and a bunch of people I know who don’t do videos, and a bunch of people I’ve never met. For those people, thanks so much, it’s great to know this stuff is being seen, and I hope you’ll keep coming here and checking out my projects and ramblings.
Thanks so much!!

Thanks for singling us out - glad that you enjoyed that line. Seeing as how we don’t own a basketball, I figured a shotgun would be the next best thing.

Thanks. I had no idea my submission was postmodern. Perhaps it is that which makes it postmodern, though.
I’m having a real hard time wrapping my mind around this postmodern thing. I need a break!
(Cue “Kit Kat” song from 1989)
What was I even writing about?
Hold more contests. They am fun. Me sleep now. Have work tomorrow. Poop.

All right! Third runner up! I have to say that the Incredible Journey Iris made me laugh long and hard, and Will’s was brilliant as well. Just glad to be among these other great Irises. Keep on rockin’ in the free world, Scott, and count me in if you hold any more contests. How about a ‘Host Barn’ contest? Think about it.

And what’s more, congratulations Ignacio!

Anne Frank thanks you for the extremely honorable mention. She doesn’t get out much so your contest really motivated her.
(But seriously, it was so much fun. Do more contests! If you contest it, we will make vids! Be our Kevin Costner!)

Wow. I’m so happy that Scott T.T. Gairdner has brought such a diverse group of young film makers into direct competition with each other. If only Meg Ryan could see this now.
